The Argentine army is set to receive 2CA2 tanks that have been upgraded by Elbit, as reported by Argentine military officials in “Defense News.” These tanks were originally produced in Argentina in collaboration with Germany from 1979 to 1995. The project commenced in 2010 in Argentina with Elbit, and Argentine companies were involved in the implementation of the project.
The budget for the tanks, totaling 30 million dollars for 74 tanks, was approved in Buenos Aires in 2021, with contracts signed in July of the previous year. Work on the tanks started in late 2023, with the final tank delivery expected by 2027. However, due to Argentina’s challenging economic situation, Javier Millay’s government may need to allocate additional funds to the project in the 2025 and 2027 budgets. President Millay hinted at an increase in the number of upgraded tanks by another 50 units as part of the army’s enhancement efforts.
These tank upgrades include advanced technology from Elbit and local partners like IMPSA company. Technologies like E-Laws laser-guided threat detection system and COAPS-L electro-optical sensing system have been integrated into the tanks to enhance their identification, intention, attack, and tracking capabilities. The communication systems have also been upgraded; however, there has been a delay in improving their protection. Options for additional protection from Israeli IMI company are under consideration for installation on the tanks.
The tank upgrade project aims to enhance Argentina’s defense capabilities significantly by incorporating cutting-edge technology into its military equipment. The delivery of these upgraded tanks is expected to commence this year and continue through the next few years, signaling a significant advancement in Argentina’s defense capabilities.
