Jasmine Paolini made history at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round for the first time in her career. The 28-year-old Italian defeated Bianca Andreescu in a thrilling match on Court One under the roof. Paolini won 7-6 (7-4) 6-1, with both players initially looking evenly matched in the first set.
Paolini’s impressive display saw her advance to the second week of Wimbledon, making it all the more remarkable considering she had never won a match at this prestigious tournament before. Her recent surge in form has seen her go beyond the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in 2024. In the next round, she will face either Madison Keys or Marta Kostyuk.
The rematch between Paolini and Andreescu was a highly anticipated encounter, as they had previously met in the French Open third round five weeks prior, where Paolini emerged victorious in three sets. Andreescu, currently ranked 176th in the world, struggled to maintain her form throughout the match and ultimately lost the final six games of the second set.
Delighted with her performance, Paolini stated, “I think I played a good match. I tried to be aggressive because if not, I am going to have to run so much.” In other matches, Emma Navarro defeated Diana Shnaider to set up a highly anticipated encounter against either second seed Coco Gauff or Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the next round.
