In 2024-25, the International Ski Federation (FIS) has announced a provisional schedule for the Alpine World Cup. The season-ending Finals will be held in Sun Valley, Idaho from March 22 to March 27. This venue last hosted World Cup ski racing in 1977 and will see men’s and women’s races in downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom.
Sun Valley has been marked with (TBC) by FIS, indicating that it is not yet confirmed for the event. However, this marks a much-anticipated return for American ski racing fans as it has been since 2017 when the U.S. last hosted the World Cup Finals in Aspen, Colorado.
Beaver Creek in Colorado will also host its first women’s races since 2013 next season. From December 6 to December 8, Beaver Creek will host a men’s downhill, super-G and GS race as well as a women’s downhill and super-G race on December 14th and 15th respectively.
The provisional calendar also includes two new safety measures for athletes in the upcoming season. Skiers will be required to wear air bags in downhill and super-G races starting next season for injury protection. Additionally, there is a proposal to strongly recommend cut-resistant undergarments for all disciplines at all levels with the aim of making them mandatory starting with the 2025-26 season. These measures aim to enhance athlete safety and reduce the risk of serious injuries during competitions.
Overall, these changes are expected to bring excitement back into the world of alpine skiing as fans eagerly await to witness some of the best skiers take on these challenging courses once again while keeping their safety at top priority.
