In the early hours of Friday morning, two thieves broke into a currency exchange in West Town and made off with an ATM machine. The burglary occurred at around 2:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Division Street. Chicago police were alerted to the crime after receiving a burglary call and found broken glass from the front door of the business upon arrival.
According to a witness, the unknown offenders broke into the currency exchange, removed the ATM machine, and then fled in a white van. This incident marks yet another case of ATM theft in the area, as several other currency exchanges have been targeted by thieves in recent months. In January, a burglar drove a Jeep Cherokee through the front window near Roosevelt and Jefferson Street to steal an ATM machine containing an unspecified amount of money. Another currency exchange on the city’s near West Side was also recently targeted by burglars who broke through the front glass door of the business to make off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Despite these incidents occurring multiple times before, there is no clear connection between them at this time. No one is currently in custody for this particular crime and Area 3 detectives continue to investigate further.
