Baidu contemplates implementing Tesla’s robotaxi technology in China

In early May 2024, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology received support from the local Chinese government. Elon Musk reportedly suggested testing FSD functions on vehicles in the Chinese market, such as taxis, and implementing Tesla’s FSD software in Chinese taxi services.

Baidu, a leading search engine company in China, is now considering using Tesla’s robotaxi technology or FSD in the country. The General Manager of Baidu’s autonomous driving department, Xu Baoqiang, mentioned that the company would explore potential collaboration opportunities with Tesla and could potentially utilize specific Tesla applications in China.

Baidu and Tesla already have a strong partnership in China, with Tesla planning to leverage Baidu Maps to enhance its version of FSD. In fact, Tesla’s FSD software recently received tentative approval in China after clearing crucial regulatory barriers.

While progress is being made towards widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles in some U.S. states that have already adopted laws related to this topic, Tesla continues to work on regulatory approval for autonomous vehicles in the United States. However, Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla, believes that these efforts are paving the way for broader adoption and eventually leading to widespread regulatory approval in the U.S. and beyond.
