Bowling Green, Kentucky now boasts a new small business that is truly one-of-a-kind. Sweaty Glass, owned by Shane Spickard, is the second of its kind in the state and specializes in the mesmerizing art of glass blowing.
Spickard’s passion for glass blowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. From there, he fell in love with the art form and has been perfecting his craft ever since 2019. Now, he has turned his garage into his very own glass making factory where he creates stunning glass cups, vases, and other decorations using melted glass. In addition to creating beautiful pieces, Spickard also teaches classes for those eager to learn the art of glass blowing.
The process of creating these intricate glass pieces is nothing short of fascinating. Spickard starts by heating the glass and adding frit to create unique designs. He then uses various tools to sculpt the shape and even employs wet newspaper to give it extra texture. To help inflate and shape the vase, he blows air through a blowpipe before smoothing it out with a torch. The final step involves placing the piece in a stove for 12 hours to give it that perfect glow.
Sweaty Glass can be found at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green and offers classes for anyone interested in learning this captivating art form. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting out, Spickard’s expertise and passion for glass blowing are sure to inspire you to create your own masterpieces.
