Western Digital, a leading provider of data storage solutions, has recently unveiled the world’s first 4-terabyte SD card. The new SanDisk Extreme PRO SDUC UHS-I memory card was showcased at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show, an annual event that attracts broadcasters and content creators.
The pricing for the 4TB card has not been disclosed by Western Digital, but it uses the UHS-I bus at Speed Class 10 and is rated as Video Speed Class V30. This provides a minimal sequential write speed of 30 MB/s, making it suitable for recording 8K video. Despite its increasing capacity, the SD cards may not be ideal for long-term storage due to factors like memory type and environmental conditions. The lifespan of an SD card is typically around ten years, so it is advisable to opt for SSDs or external drives for storage needs.
In addition to the 4TB SD card, Western Digital is also introducing several other storage products at NAB. The company is launching the 24TB G-Drive, an external desktop hard drive priced at $699. For those looking for higher performance, there is a 24TB G-Drive Project available for $929 that features a 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port. Additionally, there is a 48TB version called the Mirror drive that includes an additional 24TB for RAID-1 mirrored backup, priced at $1,599.
