Dodgers manager says Shohei Ohtani gambling scandal not a distraction

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani will speak with the media for the first time since allegations were made against his longtime interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. Mizuhara was fired by the Dodgers after being accused of placing illegal bets on non-baseball sports. Sports betting remains illegal in California, where the Dodgers are based, which led to the situation coming to light.

Major League Baseball’s policy allows personnel to gamble on non-baseball sports as long as it is legal in that jurisdiction. However, Ohtani’s interpreter was accused of placing his bets with an alleged bookmaker who is at the center of a federal investigation. The bookmaker has denied ever talking to or meeting Ohtani, and Mizuhara’s story about Ohtani’s involvement has changed multiple times.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes that it will be beneficial for Ohtani to address the media about the situation. Despite Roberts, he thinks that the Ohtani-Mizuhara story has been a distraction to the rest of the team. The Dodgers recently played a two-game series in Seoul, South Korea against San Diego Padres and went 1-1 in those games. They will now play three games against Los Angeles Angels before returning to their regular season schedule.

As he prepares to speak with the media, Ohtani remains focused on his on-field performance and addressing the allegations surrounding his interpreter.
