Britain’s Hopes for World Athletics Relays: A Mix of Experience and Youth Amid Doping Scandals and Olympic Qualifying Push

Great Britain has announced its squad for the upcoming World Athletics Relays, including British sprinter CJ Ujah who returns to competition after serving a doping ban. The event, which takes place in the Bahamas on 4-5 May, serves as a qualifying event for the relay competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Ujah is joined in the men’s 4x100m relay squad by Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty, and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake.

Reece Prescod, another member of the Tokyo squad, has also been named in the relay team despite leaving the squad prior to last year’s World Championships. The head of sprints, hurdles, and relays for UK Athletics noted that the team has faced challenges but is motivated and focused on reaching Paris. Among the women’s squad, Asha Philip and Imani-Lara Lansiquot have been named, while Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita are not included.

At the previous World Championships, Great Britain won mixed 4x400m silver and bronze medals in addition to medals in the women’s 4x100m and 4x400m events and men’s 4x400m events. The full squad includes a mix of experienced and new athletes, indicating a promising future for British relay racing.
