City Harvest Welcomes Students from P226M to Address Food Insecurity and Promote World Autism Awareness Day

P226M, a transition program for young adults with diverse learning abilities from across the city, was welcomed by City Harvest in Sunset Park this morning. The event aimed to address food insecurity and raise awareness about World Autism Awareness Day.

City Harvest has been hosting students from P226M for years, giving them the chance to pack produce that will be distributed to food pantries and individuals in need throughout New York. This experience not only helps alleviate hunger but also provides valuable skills for the students, including self-advocacy, counting, asking for help, and social interaction.

According to Sarah Aiken, a special education teacher at P226M, the event serves multiple purposes. Students learn important life skills during their time at City Harvest by engaging in activities such as greeting supervisors and participating in meaningful work. Additionally, the event promotes diversity and inclusion while working together to make a positive impact on the community.

Olivia McMahon, senior manager of volunteer programs for City Harvest, expressed her excitement about partnering with P226M on this occasion. Celebrating diversity and working together to make a difference in the community is a top priority for City Harvest, and events like these help further that mission by creating opportunities for meaningful experiences and valuable skill-building while addressing pressing social issues such as food insecurity.
