Celebrating the Magic of Books: Uniting Around the World on World Book and Copyright Day

World Book and Copyright Day is a yearly celebration aimed at promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. On 23 April, events and activities are held around the world to emphasize the significance of books as a connection between past and future, cultures, and generations.

UNESCO and international organizations representing publishers, booksellers, and libraries nominate a World Book Capital for each year. This city takes responsibility for maintaining the momentum of the Day’s celebrations through its initiatives and activities.

The date of 23 April holds great importance in world literature as it marks the passing of famous authors such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris in 1995 chose this date to pay tribute to books and authors globally, encouraging people to engage with books and reading.

World Book and Copyright Day serves as a reminder of the power of books to connect people across time and space, preserving knowledge and culture for future generations to enjoy. It is a day to celebrate the magic of books
