Carlos Adames has been named the new champion in the middleweight division by the World Boxing Council (WBC) following Jermall Charlo’s arrest for suspected drunken driving in Texas. Charlo, an unbeaten boxer, had not defended his title since 2021 and had become the interim champion in October 2022.
The arrest occurred in Pearland, where police detained the 33-year-old Charlo on three misdemeanor charges after his blood-alcohol content was found to be over twice the legal limit. According to a police report, Charlo struck another vehicle and fled from the police during the incident.
The WBC stated that they would continue to support Jermall Charlo during his challenging times, particularly regarding his mental wellness. After evaluating the facts and circumstances, the WBC may consider ranking Charlo in the super middleweight division.
Charlo’s most recent fight was a non-title bout in November, where he achieved a unanimous-decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. With a record of 33-0 and 22 knockouts, Charlo’s boxing career has faced a setback due to his legal troubles.
