Clariant and Lummus receive contract for catalyst technology

Huizhou Boeko Materials Co. Ltd. has selected Clariant and its process partner, Lummus Technology, to provide their CATOFIN catalyst and process technology for the dehydrogenation of isobutane at their new plant in Huizhou City, China. The highly efficient CATOFIN process uses fixed-bed reactors and operates at optimum reactor pressure and temperature to maximize catalytic dehydrogenation of isobutane for high yields of isobutylene at low investment and operating costs.

The scope of the current award includes the technology license and basic engineering. Once complete, the plant will produce 550,000 tpy of net isobutylene, which will serve as feedstock for the downstream production of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). This partnership between Clariant, Lummus Technology, and Huizhou Boeko Materials Co. marks a significant advancement in catalyst and process technology for the dehydrogenation of isobutane.

Clariant’s tailor-made catalyst will be supplied exclusively to Huizhou Boeko Materials Co., while Lummus Technology holds an exclusive license on the process technology used in this project. The collaboration aims to enhance efficiency and productivity in the production of isobutylene, supporting downstream processes in the production of MTBE. The selection of CATOFIN technology for this project demonstrates confidence in the reliability and performance of the catalyst and process technology provided by Clariant and Lummus Technology.

Jens Cuntze, Business President Catalysts and APAC at Clariant, stated that they were delighted to deliver their industry-leading CATOFIN catalyst to this first Huizhou Boeko plant and look forward to a fruitful partnership. He added that CATOFIN offers excellent reliability and productivity, yielding superior annual production output, which in turn leads to increased overall profitability for the plant.
