Clocking Time: How Climate Change is Impacting Earth’s Rotation and Coordinated Universal Time

In recent years, scientists have made a startling discovery: climate change is affecting the Earth’s rotation speed and could potentially impact how we keep time. The melting of ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica is causing more water to enter the world’s oceans, leading to a redistribution of mass. This process is causing a very slight slowdown in the Earth’s rotation, although the planet is still spinning faster than ever before.

As a result of these changes, global timekeepers may need to adjust their clocks sooner than anticipated. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is used worldwide to regulate time, relies on the Earth’s rotation rate. However, since this rate is not constant, it can affect the length of our days and nights. To maintain accuracy, UTC has included leap seconds since the 1970s – adding approximately 27 seconds to account for these variations.

The latest research suggests that without the accelerating melting of polar ice caps, a “negative leap second” – subtracting one second from world clocks – would have been necessary in 2026. Duncan Agnew, lead author of the study, expressed surprise at how much humans had impacted the Earth’s rotation. He emphasized that these changes were unprecedented and demonstrated just how significant climate change was on our planet.

This research highlights not only the effects of climate change on our planet but also on our everyday lives. As we continue to observe these changes in rotation speed and mass distribution, it will be crucial for us to take action and mitigate their impacts on both our environment and society.
