Conflicts of Interest in Government-Industry Partnerships: The Coalition for Health AI Loses Two New Members Four Months After Joining the Board

The Coalition for Health AI’s board of directors has recently welcomed two new members, Micky Tripathi and Troy Tazbaz. Tripathi is the national coordinator for health information technology and acting chief AI officer at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), while Tazbaz is the director of the Digital Health Center of Excellence at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their roles in government bring a fresh perspective to the group’s mission to set safety standards and frameworks for evaluating artificial intelligence models in healthcare.

However, just four months after joining the board, Tripathi and Tazbaz have decided to step down due to potential conflicts of interest arising from their roles in the federal government. In a statement to STAT, Tripathi mentioned that his various roles across HHS could create conflicts, prompting their decision to withdraw from the industry body. He also leads HHS’ AI task force, which was established as part of a White House executive order on safe AI use. The FDA did not provide a comment on the situation.
