Indiana Fever sports columnist Gregg Doyel will no longer be covering the team, as confirmed by an IndyStar spokesperson to CNN. This decision comes after an incident during Caitlin Clark’s introductory news conference with the WNBA team, where Doyel made a gesture that was perceived as inappropriate.
During the news conference, Doyel made a heart gesture with his hands towards Clark, reminiscent of a gesture she often used during her college basketball career. Clark responded and Doyel made a comment that was considered inappropriate and sparked backlash. Doyel later issued an apology, acknowledging that his comment was clumsy and awkward.
It is unclear if Doyel will cover the team at all during the season, as the parent company of IndyStar, Gannett, did not respond to inquiries about this matter. CNN has reached out to Doyel for comment, but it is not known if he will provide a statement.
Doyel’s last article was published in April on the Indianapolis Colts’ NFL draft. Meanwhile, Clark and the Fever are gearing up for their 25th regular season, starting with a game against the Connecticut Sun next Tuesday. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
