Dangerous Algal Bloom in Candlewood Reservoir: Health Department Issues Warning and Advises Avoidance of Swimming

The Douglas County Health Department and City of Omaha’s Stormwater Division have issued a warning about a harmful algal bloom at Candlewood Reservoir in west Omaha. On Wednesday, samples from the reservoir near 132nd and West Dodge Road were analyzed, revealing total microcystin levels above the safe threshold of eight parts per billion.

As a result, the public is being advised against swimming in the reservoir until further notice. Recreational fishing and boating are still allowed, but residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid any activities that could result in water ingestion. It is important to keep pets away from the water and prevent them from drinking from the lake as well.

This alert serves as a reminder to prioritize safety and avoid contact with the affected water. Please heed the guidance provided by health officials to protect yourself and your loved ones.
