Four people have died from West Nile fever, a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The Ministry of Health has reported 48 cases, with 36 hospitalized and five on ventilators. Most cases are mild, but severe illness can occur. Symptoms include fever, headache, weakness, joint and muscle pain, rash, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, neurological symptoms such as meningitis and acute encephalitis may occur.
