Detroit has been ranked among the cities with the worst air quality in the world following Fourth of July celebrations filled with fireworks shows. According to IQAir, a comparison of air quality in cities worldwide, Detroit is listed as No. 4 for worst air quality among the most populated major cities. This poses risks for everyone, especially sensitive groups like children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with cardiac and pulmonary diseases.
During periods of poor air quality, it is important for people to limit their time spent outdoors. Other cities in Southeast Michigan, such as Grosse Pointe Park, Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, Oak Park, Berkley, Madison Heights, Dearborn, and Dearborn Heights are also experiencing unhealthy conditions. In addition to the poor air quality, the National Weather Service has predicted isolated severe storms for Friday afternoon. These storms could bring winds of up to 60 miles per hour or more and hail that is one inch in diameter. While the risk for storms is marginal, they are expected to occur between 4 and 10 p.m. For the latest updates on weather conditions in Southeast Michigan, stay tuned to our CBS Detroit NEXT Weather team.
