Capacity of world’s largest offshore wind farm increases

The Dogger Bank wind farm, which is currently the world’s largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of 3.6 GW, is set to expand as contractors SSE and Equinor have submitted a scoping report for the next phase of the project. This expansion will add 2 GW of capacity, bringing even more clean energy to the grid.

As countries continue to look for cleaner energy sources, renewable projects like wind and solar are becoming increasingly popular. In the UK, where land and sunlight are limited, offshore wind projects like Dogger Bank are an ideal solution, tapping into the strong winds of the North Sea. The project is currently in its third phase of construction, with plans for a fourth phase to further increase its power generation capacity.

Located 200km off the Yorkshire coast, the Dogger Bank project is a cluster of offshore wind farms in the North Sea. Each phase has a capacity of 1.2 GW, utilizing GE’s Halide wind turbine series with a total of 277 turbines across the first three phases. When completed, the project will provide enough electricity to power 6 million UK homes.

Construction on the first three phases of the project is ongoing, with completion expected by 2025. As preparations for phase D begin, contractors are seeking permits from The Crown Estate for the expansion. If approved, this expansion will significantly increase the overall capacity of the Dogger Bank project and bring even more clean energy to the grid.
