Ecuador Prisoners Facing Starvation as Company Halts Feeding Service, Sparking Unrest among Families”.

Prisoners in Ecuador are facing starvation as the company responsible for feeding 11,000 inmates in 20 prisons has ceased operations. The government led by Daniel Noboa owes a 30 million dollar debt that also includes school meals for one and a half million children. On April 26, the first reports of food shortages emerged, but the Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty, SNAI, initially denied any interruptions in service. However, concerns have grown as families gather outside penitentiaries, fearing for their loved ones’ lives.

Human rights organizations have reported numerous cases of abuse since the declaration of a state of internal commotion by Noboa, which allowed military forces to enter prisons. Families such as Araceli’s have expressed worry over the lack of food, medical care, and alleged mistreatment of prisoners. Some prisons have allowed family members to bring food to inmates relying on donations from the community to supplement shortages.

Legal action has been taken to address the lack of food in prisons with a judge ordering the Ministry of Finance to provide funds to SNAI within 15 days. However, allegations of corruption involving the food supplier Lafattoria SA have complicated things further leading to a standoff between the government and private company. While families continue to demand a solution from the streets, they are anxious and powerless due to limited information about their loved ones’ well-being inside prisons.

The dire conditions inside prisons have left families feeling anxious and powerless with limited information about their loved ones’ well-being. Sandra whose son is imprisoned in Litoral Penitentiary worries about his health and safety after receiving a distressing video showing him in a state of distress. The lack of transparency and communication from prison authorities has only added to anguish and uncertainty faced by families of prisoners who anxiously await resolution to this crisis.

In conclusion, Ecuador’s prisoners are facing severe conditions due to hunger caused by financial difficulties that led companies responsible for feeding them ceased operations causing widespread concern among families who gathered outside penitentiaries fearing for their loved ones’ lives.
