Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

Evansville, Indiana will host the annual Black Barbershop Health Initiative on Saturday. The event offers free health screenings and education on chronic diseases to the community. This statewide effort aims to provide important health resources to Black men, who have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana.

Black barbershops play a crucial role in the health of Black men, as they often serve as a therapy center and a place of healing. The strong relationship between Black men and their barbers is built on trust, making barbershops an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage Black men to seek preventative medical care.

Recognizing the importance of addressing these health disparities, the Black Barbershop Health Initiative aims to provide accessible health resources to the community. Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health show that prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos.
