Exclusive Interview with Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister: Navigating Complex U.S.-Cuban Relations

In an exclusive interview with us, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, discussed the high-level talks on U.S.-Cuban migration that took place in Washington last week. During the meeting, he emphasized how U.S. policies that accelerate permanent residency for Cubans in the United States have a significant impact on the flow of people between the two countries. However, he stressed that the primary driving force behind migration remains to be the ongoing U.S. embargo on Cuba.

According to Fernández de Cossío, economic difficulties faced by Cubans push them to seek better opportunities elsewhere, and U.S. policies aimed at undermining the Cuban economy only exacerbate these conditions. He also touched upon topics such as the upcoming 2024 election and potential policy continuities between the Trump and Biden administrations.

Furthermore, Fernández de Cossío shared Cuba’s stance on various issues, including U.S.-backed Israeli military action in Gaza and recent protests within Cuba addressing living conditions and other grievances.

Overall, our conversation shed light on the complex dynamics shaping U.S.-Cuban relations, from migration policies to geopolitical conflicts and domestic challenges facing the island nation.

In an exclusive interview with us last week, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s deputy minister of foreign affairs discussed high-level talks on U.S.-Cuban migration that took place in Washington earlier this month.

During the meeting with American officials, Fernández de Cossío highlighted how U.S policies expedite permanent residency for Cubans in America significantly affect immigration flows between both countries.

However, he stressed that despite these efforts to improve immigration procedures for Cubans living abroad; it remains true that enduring sanctions imposed by Washington continue to drive mass migration from our island nation.

According to him, economic hardships faced by millions of Cubans compel them to seek better opportunities elsewhere – a trend further aggravated by US policies designed specifically to weaken our economy.

Furthermore, during our discussion with him about future plans regarding international relations after next year’s elections in America,
we learned about Cuba’s stance regarding Israel’s military action against Palestinians in Gaza Strip and its recent protests over living conditions back home.

All these factors were brought up during our insightful conversation with one of Cuba’s top diplomats – providing readers across world an opportunity to understand more deeply what is shaping relations between two nations separated only by 90 miles but so much apart politically and ideologically.
