GSA appoints new director for Technology Modernization Fund

Larry Bafundo, who previously served as the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF)’s deputy executive director, has been appointed as the new permanent executive director of the fund by the General Services Administration (GSA). Bafundo is recognized for his experience in leading complex digital initiatives in both the public and private sectors.

Prior to joining GSA in January, Bafundo led modernization efforts at the Department of Labor, including a $2 billion project to upgrade unemployment insurance systems. He also worked as a product manager at GSA’s 18F unit, where he focused on transformation efforts for crime data collection and reporting.

GSA Deputy Administrator Katy Kale expressed confidence in Bafundo’s abilities and highlighted the importance of investing in IT modernization projects through the TMF. She emphasized that the TMF team will continue to deliver meaningful results for both GSA and other federal agencies. This announcement comes at a time when there are calls from federal IT leaders and lawmakers to revitalize the TMF as it nears the end of its America Rescue Plan funding.

Overall, Bafundo’s promotion signals a continued commitment to advancing IT modernization efforts within the federal government. His experience and leadership will be crucial in driving innovation and delivering secure and seamless services to the American public.
