Former Stanford President John Hennessy Receives Prestigious Vannevar Bush Award for Outstanding Scientific Contributions

Stanford University’s former president, John Hennessy, has been awarded the prestigious Vannevar Bush Award for 2024 by the National Science Board (NSB). The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to science and technology throughout their lives, as stated on the NSB website.

Dario Gil, chair of the External Engagement Committee and senior vice president and director of IBM research, expressed excitement over Hennessy’s selection for the award. He praised Hennessy’s groundbreaking work in computer architecture and his commitment to developing the future STEM workforce. These values align with Vannevar Bush’s own dedication to advancing science and technology.

In a statement released by the NSB, Hennessy expressed his passion for lifelong learning, echoing Bush’s belief that science is the new frontier with countless questions waiting to be answered. Currently, Hennessy holds positions as the chairperson of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, and the Shriram Family Director of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University. The Vannevar Bush Award will be formally presented to him on May 1, 2024 at the National Science Foundation Awards Gala taking place at the Renwick Gallery in Washington D.C.
