In the wake of economic sanctions and monetary blockades imposed on them, wealthy Russians are increasingly turning to Thailand’s beaches as a new destination for their money. Previously, Russian investors would buy apartments in Europe and the Middle East, but with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, they have been seeking new investment opportunities.
According to the country’s real estate information center Reic, Russians owned the most apartments in Thailand last year, surpassing Chinese investors. The value of properties purchased by Russians in Thailand has been increasing, reaching six billion baht last year. Luxury apartments are especially popular among Russian buyers, with many opting for properties above 10 million baht.
Popular destinations for Russian investors in Thailand include the beach town of Phuket, where a housing boom is currently underway. Other popular locations include Chonburi and Bangkok. With direct flights from Russia to Thailand available from airlines such as Thai Airways and S7 Airlines, it has never been easier for Russian citizens to visit and invest in this tropical paradise.
The influx of Russian tourists and investors is crucial for Thailand’s tourism industry, especially with the number of Chinese tourists not returning to pre-pandemic levels. However, this increased presence has led to rising real estate prices, making it difficult for locals to find affordable rental apartments. Despite these challenges, Thailand remains an attractive destination for wealthy Russians looking to diversify their investment portfolios while enjoying some sunshine and relaxation on its beautiful beaches.
