New York Governor Hochul Secures $127 Million for Statewide Law Enforcement Technology Upgrade to Enhance Crime Solving

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced $127 million in funding for police departments and sheriffs’ offices across New York to invest in new technology and equipment aimed at preventing and solving crimes, as well as improving public safety. This funding, secured in the FY 2025 Enacted Budget, will support 378 law enforcement agencies that responded to the state’s call for funding applications last fall.

The Governor’s Office stated that police departments and sheriffs’ offices will utilize this funding to purchase modern technology and equipment to enhance their operations and better address crime prevention and solving. The grants will cover a range of equipment and technology, such as license plate readers, camera systems, computer-aided dispatch systems, software, unmanned aerial vehicles, gunshot detection devices, and smart equipment for patrol vehicles and officers.

With a focus on public safety, Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of these investments in law enforcement to ensure they have the necessary resources to protect communities. The State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has started notifying agencies of their grant awards, with award letters to be sent out this month to those who applied in late 2023.

A significant portion of the funding will be allocated towards license plate readers, body-worn and patrol vehicle equipment, and public safety camera systems. Division of Criminal Justice Services Commissioner Rossana Rosado expressed gratitude towards Governor Hochul for listening to the needs of police agencies and community organizations across the state. She looks forward to collaborating with law enforcement agencies and community partners to strengthen relationships and support practices aimed at enhancing public safety and community well-being.
