Athens transforms abandoned airport into $8 billion smart city named Ellinikon

Greece is set to revolutionize the European landscape with its new green and high-tech smart city, Ellinikon. The $8 billion project, which has been underway for over a decade, is poised to create a “zip-code paradise” that combines modern amenities, stunning views, and sustainable practices in an urban environment.

The centerpiece of the project is the Riviera Tower, which will be Greece’s first skyscraper. This towering structure will serve as a symbol of the country’s commitment to technological innovation and environmental sustainability.

Ellinikon is situated on the grounds of a former Athens airport and will include a high-end mall, sports park, and advanced technology infrastructure. The project aims to merge scenic coastline views with cutting-edge technology in a unique urban environment.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2026 and is projected to attract one million new tourists annually. Moreover, it is expected to contribute 3.3 billion euros ($3.6 billion) to the Greek economy.

Ellinikon joins a growing trend of new high-tech cities being developed around the world. Many of these cities are located in China or the Middle East. However, Ellinikon stands out as an example of how Greece can embrace technological innovation while maintaining its cultural heritage and commitment to sustainability.
