The Green Bay Packers have decided to make a strategic move by shifting Alex McGough from quarterback to wide receiver. McGough, who is 28 years old, spent the previous season on the team’s practice squad as the third quarterback behind Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. However, despite being a talented athlete, he did not see much playing time in that role.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur commented on McGough’s athleticism and highlighted his performance running receiver routes on the scout team. He expressed the team’s desire to give him a chance at wide receiver and showcase his talents.
Despite selecting Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh round of the draft, the Packers did not choose a receiver or sign one in free agency. However, they have a crowded wide receiver room, with several other talented players such as Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, Malik Heath, Samori Toure, Grant DuBose, and Thyrick Pitts.
McGough has already shown great success as an athlete outside of football. He was named USFL MVP in 2023 and could also contribute on special teams for the Packers if needed. This move shows that the team is committed to finding new ways to utilize McGough’s skills and maximize his potential on the field.
