The International Criminal Court (ICC) has launched an investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top Hamas leaders. Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the ICC, has applied for arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged crimes such as “starvation,” “wilful killing,” and “extermination and/or murder.”
In a statement, Khan stated that these crimes were part of a widespread and systematic attack against the Palestinian civilian population as per state policy, which continues to this day. He also stated that the charges against Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, head of the movement, involve crimes such as “extermination,” “rape and other acts of sexual violence,” and “taking hostages as a war crime.”
The investigation is ongoing, with Khan pursuing accountability for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by both Israeli and Hamas leaders. The prosecutor’s actions have sparked controversy, with some arguing that it is an overreach of power by the ICC to target leaders of sovereign states.
