Influenza: Year-round Threat in Tropical Climates and its Impact on Pregnant Women

While flu shots are typically recommended in the US during October, it’s important to note that influenza cases can occur year-round in countries like Vietnam with a tropical monsoon climate. In Vietnam, hospitals have recently reported an increase in cases of influenza A and B, along with complications.

Pregnant women are at a higher risk of serious complications if they get the flu, including birth defects, premature birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth. Vaccination is particularly important for pregnant women as it can reduce the risk of hospitalization and stillbirth.

Flu viruses change throughout the year, which is why an annual flu shot is necessary. There are various types of influenza vaccines available in Vietnam, including quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines to protect against different strains of the virus. Pregnant women are recommended to get flu shots in the second or third trimester to protect themselves and their newborns.

When flu symptoms appear, it’s important to take precautions such as avoiding crowded places, wearing a mask, and avoiding contact with high-risk individuals. Resting properly, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated can also help the body recover from illness more quickly.
