Instagram is currently testing a new feature that allows users to access a list of the most popular trending topics being discussed on the social network in the United States. This feature can be found in both the main feed and the search tab, under a section called ‘Today’s Topics’.
According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, the social network is working on a feature similar to Twitter’s X trends, which displays emerging trending topics. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has announced that this feature is being tested with users in real-time in the United States.
The trending topics are displayed as a list on the search page, showing the main topics that users are discussing in their Threads publications, ordered by interactions. Each topic includes a featured post. The trends are also displayed within the main feed, encapsulated in the ‘Today’s Topics’ section, where users can slide from one trending topic to another.
Meta’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems determine which topics are trending by evaluating people’s posts and interactions. Content specialists will review these topics to ensure they are not duplicated or confusing. Despite Meta’s recent announcement to limit recommended political content on Instagram and Threads, political topics may still be selected as trends.
Once optimized, this feature will be implemented in more countries and languages worldwide.
