Iowa Teachers Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann Recognized as Finalists for National Presidential Awards in Mathematics and Science Teaching”.

Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann have been named finalists in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by the Iowa Department of Education. Wenger teaches at Valley Elementary School in Elgin and is a finalist for PAEMST Mathematics, while Kaufmann teaches second grade at North Tama Elementary School in Traer and is the district’s STEM coordinator, a finalist for PAEMST Science.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is a prestigious recognition program that honors kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. Since its establishment in 1983, over 5,200 teachers from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been honored through this program.

The recipients are chosen for their exceptional teaching skills, deep subject knowledge, and ability to inspire and support student success. They serve as role models in their communities and demonstrate the significant impact teachers have on student achievement. The recipients will receive a paid trip to Washington, D.C., for recognition events and professional development opportunities, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and a certificate signed by the President of the United States.
