Iran Set to Hold Presidential Elections on July 5: Who Will Win Amid Controversy over Voter Turnout?

Iran is set to hold its second round of early presidential elections on July 5, following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash on May 19. The first round, held on June 28, saw Masoud Pezeshkian and conservative Said Jalili emerge as the top candidates. While Pezeshkian received about 42% of the votes, Jalili received approximately 39%.

Despite official reports stating that the voter turnout in the first round was at 40%, there are doubts about its accuracy, with some suggesting it could have been much lower. In the second round, Jalili has a better chance of winning as voters who supported other conservative politicians in the first round have no alternative. The turnout in this round will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

While Iran’s president is formally the head of state, the country is effectively ruled by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The outcome of these elections will have significant implications for Iran’s future direction.
