Jeff Bezos closes in on Elon Musk as the world’s richest person after selling Amazon stock

Jeff Bezos, the executive chairman of Amazon, currently holds the title of the world’s second richest man. According to Bloomberg, his estimated net worth is $200 billion. However, this may soon change as he recently sold more than $2 billion worth of Amazon stock, almost 12 million shares, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Bezos has also proposed selling an additional 50 million Amazon shares around February 7th, worth an estimated $8.4 billion. These sales could potentially boost his net worth and allow him to reclaim the title of the wealthiest person from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

As of now, Bezos sits at number two on Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index with an estimated net worth of $200 billion. This puts him just $9 billion behind Musk, who currently holds the top spot with $209 billion. Musk’s net worth is tied to Tesla’s stock, which has dropped 24% in the first two months of this year. This has already impacted Musk’s claim as the world’s wealthiest person on Forbes’ real-time billionaire tracker, where he lost his number one spot to LVMH chairman in late January. Forbes calculates net worth differently than Bloomberg and Arnault and family hold the number one spot with a net worth of $220 billion while Musk is number two on the Forbes list with an estimated net worth of $201.6 billion and Bezos is number three at $195.9 billion.
