In recent news, the technology giant Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has temporarily suspended its Threads micromessaging application in Turkey. This decision was made in response to a provisional ruling by the country’s Competition Authority, which prohibits the exchange of data between Instagram and Threads. The Competition Authority believes that sharing data between these platforms allows Meta to gain information about users and use it for commercial activities, creating unfair competition due to its dominant position.
Due to the provisional measure, Meta had no choice but to suspend Threads in Turkey. The company stated that it will continue to negotiate to bring the application back online, although it did not specify a timeline. Meanwhile, the Competition Authority also imposed a daily fine on Meta as part of another investigation related to data sharing notification messages sent to users.
