Recap of Copa América 2024: Mexico’s experiment falls short as Venezuela and Ecuador advance from Group B

At Copa América, Mexico was eliminated after a scoreless draw with Ecuador on Sunday at State Farm Stadium. Ecuador advanced to the quarterfinals as the runner-up in Group B, while Venezuela won the group for just the second time ever. Salomón Rondón, Venezuela’s all-time leading scorer, scored his 43rd international goal in this game. Jamaica has still not earned a point at Copa América and is winless in nine games, with Venezuela leading the all-time matchup.

Mexico has failed to advance three times when needing a win in the final group game. This is the first time they have been eliminated in the group stage after opening with a win. Meanwhile, Ecuador has reached the quarterfinals at three of the last four editions of Copa América, after going out in the group stage at six straight tournaments.

Venezuela has won all three of their group stage matches for the first time ever. Jamaica has yet to earn a point at Copa América and is winless in nine games against Venezuela.
