Microsoft has just hired Sam Altman, co-founder and former number one of OpenAI, to lead a new artificial intelligence research team within the company. Altman and Greg Brockman, both co-founders of OpenAI, will join Microsoft along with other colleagues to work on this project. The CEO, Satya Nadella, announced the hiring on X and welcomed Altman to the company.
Altman reacted positively to the news and expressed his excitement about building something new with Microsoft. “We are going to build something new and it will be incredible,” he wrote on X. Brockman also announced that several other key OpenAI employees would be joining the team at Microsoft.
This announcement comes after a tumultuous weekend for OpenAI, during which Sam Altman was fired following a review process by the board of directors. The body no longer had confidence in his ability to lead the start-up and decided to let him go. Emmett Shear, who was previously CEO of Twitch, has been appointed as interim number one at OpenAI and plans to launch an investigation into Altman’s firing within 30 days.
