Mirabai Chanu, a former world champion, has been absent from international weightlifting competitions since suffering a hip injury at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. However, she is determined to secure an Olympic quota for India in the women’s 49 kg category and will be competing at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand starting on Sunday.
Despite her challenges with injuries, she achieved a total lift of 200 kg at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022, placing her second in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for her division. The OQR is determined by the athletes’ best total lifts in the qualifying competitions. The top 10 athletes in the OQR rankings by the end of the qualification window on April 28 will secure quotas for their countries in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Fans can watch live streamed coverage of Group A weightlifting competitions on Olympics.com and find full coverage of the event on the International Weightlifting Federation’s Facebook page. This event is crucial as it is the final qualifying event for weightlifting in the Paris Olympics and will be live-streamed for fans to watch.
