Saving a life: how 45 minutes of patient resuscitation revived someone in cardiac arrest

In Ho Chi Minh City, a 39-year-old man collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest while using his chest to block a ball. Doctors at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital were able to resuscitate him for 45 minutes with 10 electric shocks before performing ECMO to save his life.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient was in critical condition. His pulse could not be detected, blood pressure could not be measured, and he was experiencing continuous ventricular tachycardia. Despite non-stop heart massages and electric shocks, his heart did not respond. However, the medical team persevered in resuscitation efforts for 45 minutes before the patient showed signs of recovery.

The patient experienced severe hypotension and pulmonary edema after resuscitation efforts were halted. To protect his brain and support his heart and lungs, doctors utilized hypothermia and ECMO treatments alongside continuous dialysis over 48 hours. The patient regained consciousness after this time and was able to come off ECMO after 72 hours, ventilation support after 4 days, and was discharged from the ICU after 6 days.

Genetic testing revealed that the patient had a mutation in the MYPN gene, which is linked to dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden death. He had a defibrillator implanted to prevent future sudden deaths and will undergo cardiovascular rehabilitation before resuming normal activities. It is recommended that individuals engaging in sports know their cardiovascular health, especially if there is a family history of sudden cardiac death, and seek medical attention if symptoms arise during physical activity.

In conclusion, it was swift medical interventions coupled with genetic testing that led to the patient’s survival. The importance of understanding one’s cardiovascular health and seeking appropriate care cannot be overstated, particularly in cases with a family history of cardiac issues.
