New Bird Flu Restrictions Affect Dairy Cattle and Consumer Health in the US

The USDA has recently imposed new restrictions on dairy cattle due to the growing cases of bird flu in eight states. During a press conference, Bernadette Albanese, the Medical Director of El Paso County Public Health, voiced her concerns about the impact of the virus on food and milk supply. She stated that the virus had been detected in milk samples, raising issues related to food safety.

The new restrictions from the USDA require testing cows for Influenza A virus, including bird flu, before crossing state lines. For herds that test positive, owners must provide epidemiological information such as animal movement tracking. Immediate requirements are for lactating cattle, while guidelines for other classes of cattle are based on scientific factors and evolving risks.

Local residents like Jaden Knowles are concerned about the potential health effects of bird flu on themselves and their families. Knowles mentioned that the contagious nature of bird flu is particularly concerning among children and hopes that companies will take necessary steps to safeguard consumer health.
