According to a recent announcement from the Ministry of Economy, Luis Lucero has been appointed as the new Secretary of Mining by the government of Javier Milei. Lucero is a lawyer with extensive experience in project financing, corporate matters, and complex arbitrations and litigation. He specializes in mining industry and natural resources law, having completed a Postgraduate Degree in Business Law from Universidad Argentina de la Empresa.
Lucero also holds a Master of Arts degree with honors from University College London (UCL) and has taken various specialization courses and seminars related to government policy and corporate strategy in mining at the University of Dundee, negotiation at Harvard Law School, and foundations of organizational sciences at Columbia Business School and the University of Cambridge.
The Mining Secretariat, led by Luis Lucero, plays an essential role in proposing, executing, and controlling the country’s mining policy. The Secretariat works closely with provinces, municipalities, investors, companies, and international organizations to ensure that the mining sector operates efficiently while also protecting the environment.
Argentina has vast geological-mining potential which is currently underutilized. Last year alone, Argentina exported $4 billion in mining products. With continued investment in copper projects and lithium extraction initiatives as part of the country’s transition towards energy sources with low greenhouse emissions, it is projected that by 2030 this number could increase conservatively to $20 billion or even reach $25 billion.
