Oracle Corp.: Nashville as New World Headquarters – Driven by Health Care Industry Presence and Employee Appeal

At the Oracle Health Summit in Nashville, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corp., announced that the company’s planned campus in the city would serve as its world headquarters. This decision is part of Oracle’s larger plan to bring 8,500 jobs and invest over $1 billion in the city over the next decade. Nashville was chosen as the location for Oracle’s new campus due to its prominence in the U.S. health care industry.

Former U.S. Sen. Bill Frist, who is also a doctor and businessman, questioned Ellison about the choice of Nashville. Ellison, who recently acquired electronic medical records company Cerner, referred to Nashville as a “health center,” noting the city’s strong presence in the health care industry. He also mentioned that the city’s appeal to employees, as indicated by surveys, played a significant role in Oracle’s decision to move its world headquarters to Nashville.

Nashville is home to over 900 health care companies with 550,000 employees and has a growing reputation as a hub for health care industry giants like HCA Healthcare and Change Healthcare. According to Ellison, Nashville’s vibrant culture, family-friendly environment, and central position in the health care industry make it an ideal location for Oracle’s new campus. In 2021, Oracle purchased 60 acres of land in downtown Nashville for $254 million and committed an additional $175 million upfront for public infrastructure projects such as a pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland River. The company’s plans for the riverfront campus include amenities like a community clinic, a concert venue, a hotel and restaurant adding to Nashville’s appeal as a desirable place to live and work.

In conclusion, Oracle Corp.’s decision to move its world headquarters to Nashville was driven by several factors including its strong presence in the health care industry
