Study shows AI can identify fear and danger in the voices of abused women

Esther Rituerto, a renowned Spanish researcher, has been recognized for her pioneering work in utilizing artificial intelligence to identify sexist violence. Her research centers on employing speech and acoustic signals to detect dangerous situations for women. By analyzing a woman’s voice for indications of fear and surrounding sounds that signal danger, Rituerto aims to prevent attacks and combat gender-based abuse.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence in Spain has lauded Rituerto’s innovative approach to utilizing technology in the fight against gender violence. They commend her use of artificial intelligence to comprehend women’s reactions to risk or danger and develop automated mechanisms for identifying these situations based on sound cues.

Rituerto’s work is part of the UC3M4Safety project at the Carlos III University of Madrid, which aims to use technology to prevent, detect, and safeguard victims of gender violence. She and her team have developed electronic devices that can detect fear in victims through their voice and vital signs, triggering alerts to emergency services and law enforcement.

In addition to her work with speech and acoustic signals, Rituerto has also conducted research on using artificial intelligence to identify signs of gender violence in a woman’s voice with remarkable accuracy. By analyzing voice patterns and characteristics, the technology can determine if a woman has been subjected to abuse with 73% accuracy.

Rituerto continues her groundbreaking research by focusing on employing artificial intelligence to identify mental illnesses through brain imagery. Her work is paving the way for innovative technologies that can help protect victims of gender violence and improve detection and prevention strategies in the future.
