Richard Childress Racing switches up crew chiefs

Richard Childress Racing has announced competition personnel changes ahead of the trip to Martinsville Speedway. The changes include Austin Dillon getting a new crew chief for the remainder of the season as Justin Alexander returns to the No. 3 pit box, replacing Danny Stockman Jr., who was Dillon’s crew chief in 2019 and 2020. Additionally, Joel Keller has been named lead engineer of the No. 3 team.

The winningest Cup team and Martinsville Speedway have a special relationship. Alexander, who has previously served as Dillon’s crew chief, previously led the No. 3 team for part of the 2017 season and helped Dillon secure a Coca-Cola 600 win in their first race together. He also remained on the pit box in 2018 when Dillon won the Daytona 500.

Andy Petree, executive vice president for RCR, explained that these changes were made to enhance Richard Childress Racing’s overall NASCAR Cup Series program as they prepare for the rest of the season and to secure two teams in the NASCAR Playoffs. According to Petree, “These changes will help us continue our success on track and ensure that we are well-positioned to compete for championships in both series.”

Dillon is currently 28th in the Cup standings as they head to Martinsville, with one top-20 finish coming in 16th place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. With these changes, RCR hopes to improve Dillon’s performance and increase his chances of making it into the playoffs and ultimately contending for a championship.
