Revolutionizing Firefighting: DHS Introduces C-THRU, a Helmet-Mounted Device that Helps First Responders Navigate Through Dark Smoke

First responders now have a powerful tool to help them navigate through dark smoke, thanks to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) new helmet-mounted device called C-THRU. The technology was developed by Austin-based startup Qwake Technologies in partnership with the DHS through a 2020 contract.

Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of providing improved equipment and technology to first responders in order to save lives and protect firefighters. The C-THRU device is designed to be hands-free, lightweight, and equipped with a high-speed thermal camera that captures the surroundings similar to those currently used by firefighters.

There are 400 prototype devices available for fire departments to apply for. The device not only provides a clear, real-time view of the environment but also offers navigation assistance for backtracking and turn-by-turn guidance. In the event that a firefighter becomes lost in a burning building, a mayday function can be activated to alert other C-THRU wearers in the area to locate the distressed first responder.

The C-THRU system is continuously improving with over-the-air software updates, similar to a smartphone. This innovative technology will help first responders navigate dangerous situations more effectively, ultimately improving safety and saving lives.
