Revolutionizing Oceanographic Research: AFBI’s New Hybrid Propulsion Vessel to Replace Old Corystes in Northern Ireland

In 2027, the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Belfast, Northern Ireland will receive a new research vessel from Spanish shipbuilder Armon. The vessel, designed by Skipsteknisk, will be used for fishery and oceanographic research and will meet strict underwater noise requirements outlined in the ICES 209 report.

One of the key features of the new vessel is a hybrid propulsion system with a large battery pack, which allows for emission-free operations for extended periods of time. The propulsion system can also be configured to run on biofuel. This unique feature enables the vessel to remain at sea for up to 21 days at a time, making it an ideal choice for long-term research studies.

The new vessel will replace the 35-year-old Corystes and will operate in Northern Ireland’s coastal waters, the Irish Sea, and adjacent regions. It is equipped to conduct a range of research activities in these areas, marking a significant advancement for AFBI in advancing their research capabilities for fishery and oceanographic studies. Completion and delivery of the new research vessel are expected to take place in 2027.
