Wyoming Receives $1.5M Federal Grant for Technology Initiative

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has recently received a $1.5 million Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop smarter work zones through connected vehicle programs. This technology will allow WYDOT to communicate directly to drivers about work zone hazards using a Situation Data Exchange system that they developed in partnership with engineering firm Trihydro Corp.

The system will provide real-time information on hazards such as delays, width restrictions, reduced speed limits, and whether workers are present in work zones. This information will be made available not only to WYDOT but also to third parties, ensuring that automated driving systems and drivers have access to the most up-to-date information when navigating through work zones nationwide.

By better defining work zones on WYDOT’s 511 traveler information tools, this technology will enhance the safety of both employees and contractors working on these projects as well as drivers passing through them. Once fully operational, WYDOT will become one of the latest states to adopt new Federal Work Zone Data Exchange standards.

Thirty-four other states were also awarded grants for program development and implementation under this grant program. These grants do not require matching funds, making it easier for states to implement this innovative technology in their transportation systems.
