Mumps cases on the rise, says Virginia Department of Health

In Virginia, the Department of Health has reported an increase in mpox cases since January 1, with a total of 12 cases across four health regions. Of these cases, four patients required hospitalization and six were co-infected with HIV. None of the patients had been previously vaccinated against mpox. This year has also seen 12 reported cases of mpox, all from the Northern Health region.

Signs and symptoms of mpox include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, and a new, unexplained rash that may be painful. To prevent its spread through close physical contact, it is important to take precautions such as wearing protective clothing and avoiding close contact with individuals who have been confirmed to have mpox. If you have been in close contact with someone who has had mpox or are experiencing any symptoms of the disease, it is recommended to monitor yourself for 21 days and consider getting vaccinated if you fall within that time frame.

If you are currently suffering from mpox or experiencing symptoms of the disease, it is crucial to speak with your healthcare provider about getting tested, even if you have already received a vaccine. It is also essential to stay at home and avoid contact with other people and animals until your rash has completely healed to prevent further spread of the disease.
