In a significant move towards accountability, the former Rwandan Minister of Justice Stanislas Mbonampeka was arrested in Belgium last Thursday for his involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The federal public prosecutor confirmed this information following reports by various media outlets, including Efe and African news agencies.
Mbonampeka appeared in court on Thursday, where his arrest warrant was extended for a month. The arrest aligns with Rwanda’s stance that those who committed crimes should face prosecution or accountability, as stated by a spokesperson for the Rwandan public prosecutor’s office.
Ibuka, an organization representing genocide survivors, expressed satisfaction with the arrest of Mbonampeka. Philbert Gakwenzire, the organization’s chairman, described it as a relief to survivors and families of the victims who were killed on orders. Gakwenzire hopes that Mbonampeka will be extradited to Rwanda despite his advanced age. Mbonampeka stands accused of ordering the killing of over 21,000 people at the Ndera psychiatric hospital in Kigali during the genocide that commenced on April 7th, 1994.
The Belgian soldiers at the Ndera psychiatric hospital decided to evacuate following the murder of President Juvénal Habyarimana and President Cyprien Ntaryamira of Burundi on April 6th and 7th respectively. This led to an attack on the hospital allegedly ordered by Mbonampeka. The genocide resulted in the deaths of at least 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in just over three months.
